When it comes to writing in school, many students and teachers cringe. The demands of meeting state and national standards have pulled the joy right out of writing, replacing it with a focus on producing the perfect essay. This workshop will focus on how to nurture a love for writing in students and how to inspire students to be successful writers through the Writer’s Workshop approach. Descriptive and narrative writing are the initial modes explored; although, the approach, process and strategies employed can also be utilized beyond in the teaching of other modes of writing. Memoir writing works as the key to unlock the writers within each student, validating and preserving not only their personal stories, but stories of family, community and history.
