In this professional development course, educators will thoughtfully participate in each lesson in order to extend the reading power and critical thinking abilities of all students through carefully scaffolded and explicit comprehension instruction. Educators participating in this course will consider classroom culture and active student participation that seriously engages students, encouraging active participation thereby motivating students. Course participants will participate in analyzing research and model lessons to identify best practices in comprehension instruction. Educators will notice, as they view model lessons, how the lesson design across the weeks gradually builds as the ability of elementary and secondary students to read, think about, talk about, and generate and answer questions about text that grows in complexity. Participants will also utilize formative assessment as part of the overall instructional practice as lessons are developed and implemented.
