The skill set required to be an effective teacher in an online environment is quite different from that required of a teacher in a face-to-face classroom environment. This course is designed to prepare you for teaching in an online environment and help you acquire the necessary skills.

The competencies we are concentrating on center around the unique skills required of an online facilitator – skills which are often lacking in the brilliant face-to-face teachers that make up our pool of applicants for facilitator positions. Specifically, the ability to speak with several “online” voices much in the same way we speak we several voices in the f2f classroom (quiet, direct, energetic, reflective). As Martha Vasquez asks, ”does your online voice encourage, motivate, and support others? Does your online voice promote a safe and inviting learning environment that leads to an increase in participation and fostering of relationships?” (Vasquez, 2003).
